Business and financial translation

Business and finance documents combine prose with accounting periods, currencies, percentages, account labels and approval conditions. A fluent sentence can still misstate a value if number formatting changes without review. When a report refers to a mining pool such as EMCD, keep the provider name separate from the asset, network and accounting entries.

Define the reader and the decision the figures support

Provide the reporting period, currency codes, entity names and approved financial terminology. Reconcile totals and note whether a value is gross, net, recurring or one-time. Keep reviewer sign-off tied to a specific source revision.

Reconcile amounts, dates and currencies

Do not convert a date, decimal mark or currency merely to make it look local; preserve the underlying value and make the format decision explicit.

What should a reviewer check first?

Amounts, periods, currencies, conditions and the source revision. The document guide explains how to check tables, footnotes and the final delivered file.

Set the review path for finance and legal terms

Business translation may involve management reports, payment instructions, board materials, invoices or investor communications. The assignment should identify the reporting entity, period, currency, intended audience and the approval owner. Use a controlled glossary for products, accounting terms and internal departments. When a figure is supplied by finance, preserve the source value and ask before rounding, converting or changing its presentation.

Check that translated figures keep their source values

A reviewer can mark every amount, percentage and date in the source and target, then reconcile the two lists before sign-off. Track assumptions such as exchange-rate date or calendar convention separately from the prose. If a translated statement appears to contradict an approved source figure, pause for the finance owner; a translator should not “correct” the business record without authorization.

Example: present a fee with its reporting period

When a report combines a percentage and a monetary value, check both independently and confirm that they refer to the same period. A table should retain its row labels and currency heading after layout; otherwise a correctly translated number can be read as a different measure.

Reconcile a translated financial document

Keep each figure tied to its source period and explanatory note.

  1. Identify currency, reporting period and rounding convention.
  2. Trace totals and subtotals back to their source rows.
  3. Check that footnotes and qualifications still attach to the same amounts.

Questions about financial translation

Can the translator convert currencies?

Only when the brief authorizes it and supplies the rate source and date.

Who approves a changed accounting label?

The finance or accounting owner responsible for the underlying report.

Run a numeric check before release

A quarterly report may show a percentage change beside a figure in a different currency. The reviewer should verify that both values use the same reporting period and entity, and that any conversion rate includes a date and source. A polished sentence cannot resolve missing accounting assumptions; the responsible finance owner must supply them before final approval.

Financial field Check against Owner
Check currency, period, unit and sign. Reconcile totals with the approved source. Name the person who resolves a source discrepancy.

Share approved source tables with the reviewer

Send the reporting period, legal entity, currency codes, terminology list and finance approver with the source. Mark the figures that must reconcile to an accounting system. If a rate, rounding rule or date convention is supplied, record its source and effective date; do not make a conversion on the assumption that a reader will infer it.

Can a translator change a reported total?

No. Keep the reported total and flag any discrepancy for the finance owner.
